My wife found a sign making kit at a auction last night. It really looks like it's gold leaf, but I'm thinking not. The foils seem a little thick for leaf, but maybe not. Would they have used gold foils for lettering windows, trucks, etc. back then? Wife thinks she may have struck gold, but I'm no so sure.

i wouldn't be surprised at all if it were real gold.gold was relatively cheap at the time and i doubt they had the kinds of substitutes for gold that we have today.dissolve a couple of grains worth and test with stannous chloride.

A spot of nitric should find out if it's gold or not, if it bubbles green/blue it's copper based if it remains untouched it could well be gold.
