i have a chance to pick up gold plated silverware from a local flea market, though it looks to be gold i wanna know if there's something i could use to check by just my eye, a hallmark or something, its 3 lbs worth, im getting it for 30.00 is it worth it? the people wont let me acid test it (i understand why)

The value would be in whether the silverware was STERLING silver plated with gold. If it is, then you have a nice deal, as a standard dinner fork is worth about $35 in sterling.

(45 grams * .80 = 36 gms net .999 silver = 1.15 tr oz * $30 = $34.72)

But if it's sterling, it is without question stamped "sterling" and thus you wouldn't be getting it for that low of a price. Hence I'd have to venture that it was gold-plated glunkware and thus not worth very much.

Hi guy's , how are tricks ?
I just thought that it would be worth a mention that not all sterling silver is simply marked 'sterling'.
It is worth noting that some sterling may just be stamped with '925' , which denotes 925 parts per 1000 fine silver.
The number in this case would be inside the shape of an oval on it's side , the shape represents the precious metal in the piece , in this instance the oval representing silver.
I hope that this can be of use!
All the best and kind regards ,
Chris

Hello again guy's!
I've just come across another sterling silver hallmark , similar to the one mentioned above , but with a different shape outline.
This one is ''A mark applied by countries which are signatories to the international convention on hallmarking''.
I have included pictures (I appolagise for the poor quality) of both hallmarks for reference , just incase!
With kind regards ,
Chris

Most gold plated flatware I've seen was made of stainless steel. On the cheap stuff, the gold is worth about $0.10 per square inch. The best stuff might be worth $.50 per square inch, maybe a little more.
