Greetings,
I have a set of early 20th-century 24k gold-encrusted Haviland china. Each individual piece has a 2 inch wide band of gold around the rim, and there are about 30 pieces in all. (Photos available.) Is there a way of removing the gold for scrap, and if so, would it be worth the trouble?
Thanks for any info.

High end China was made with Gold leaf foil so if you say what the outside diameter is of the 2" band we can tell you pretty close how much gold is on the plates. It looks like a lot more than it really is!

If it is gold leaf, the value is about 4.4 cents ($0.044) per square inch of gold surface area, at today's $1227 gold spot. About the only other possibility would be a product like Hanovia Liquid Gold. It is probably worth a little more, about 6.2 cents per square inch.

I would wager that the set of china is worth much more, as is, than the gold on it.

As a person that has washed gold trim off hundreds of pieces of glass...
if it's the only thing you have, have tons of it, and plenty of time to wash each piece...Then go for it.
Other wise, look hard and you might find a buyer for the pieces you have that will pay for them.
You will not make anything in the end for only a couple few pieces...
