I was at the sally Ann today getting some lab stuff like coffee pots and I noticed a pendant that said gold nugget $29. It looked to be over 2 grams but wasn't stamped. I took a gamble and bought it, and it looks to be 10-14 karat although I know looks can be deceiving.

I got home and weighed it and it was 3.2 grams. If its 10 karat I think it was a good chance to take as I will more than break even.

I decided to melt it down to make sure it wasn't plated and it still looks like gold post melt. I will take it to my local jeweller and get him to acid test it.

I'll upload a pic when my kid is asleep.

The thrift stores can be a nice place to buy gold scrap. That is if you get there early ,before all the other gold diggers show up.A week ago i went to local thrift store and was lucky enough to find 3 sterling silver serving spoons for only 4 bucks.I weighed them at home, and they weighed almost 80 grams. But those stores can also grossly overprice their scrap. One day you can buy gold ring for 20% of the spot, and the other day they want 110%.

lol yeah, next time i might see if they will let me weigh the item before i buy it, i hope they don't get offended. there was another small 10 kt bracelet for cheap but i didn't know the weight so i figured the nugget was more dense. it had a small piece of quartz crystal in it i should have taken a picture before i melted it but i was too curious and didn't have an acid testing kit, so if it was plated i would find out after it was melted. It still looks like gold so i am starting to feel lucky haha.

i poured it into water while still molten, it made a cool shape, and the borax came off nicely.

i just got back from the jewelers and it tested 10 kt. that means at 1700$ per oz its worth 73.29. I paid $29 no tax so i made $44.29 off that deal.

i cant complain, now i have some material i can inquart and refine, as well as build my skills with experience.
