Hi I am new to the GRF. My name is Andreas (Andy), and I live in Austria.

where my interest comes from:
I started kayaking at the age of 11 and I still do. Anyhow - some day the wild years were gone and I started to see more of the natur. Often wondered about the journey of all the rocks, stones and sediments in my creeks and rivers.

And because of my job as technician in the Department of Environment & Biodiversity (repair and maintenance of lab equipment) and my access to fascinating technology’s like Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer or EDX got quickly hooked on heavy sediments and elements.
And now it happens, that I forget some paddling equipment when walking to the creek, but never the gold pan. Finding gold could not be avoided. And I started to find smallest amounts every where. Recently I found Au in Resistors that I found on the creek (de-littering is a serious part of my game).

I am well trained in Lab safety, have to do this every year. But the GRF safety threads are way better than what I've learned over the years. Also the members of the GRF pay attention to the security. I have just experienced this first hand! I mentioned a method to strip solder masks with Natriumhydroxid. My Warning notice was bit short. I was rebuked immediately. This is good and necessary!

On the E Waste und refining thing, I’m a greenhorn in the state of reading, reading, reading and learning. That´s what brought me to this wonderfull GR-Forum. Knowing about risks and dealing with them is a central part GRF.

I’m thankful to be here!

Welcome to the forum Andy!

Safety is indeed a top concern here. When someone adds a safety warning, it is for the benefit of anyone reading the thread now, but also for anyone who may read it in the future. We've lost a number of members over the years due to the hazards involved.

Be sure to download the book in my signature line. It will get you on the same page as the rest of our members.

Andreas welcome to the forum.
To add to Dave’s reply and inline with your job description we also stress the importance of safely disposing of any wate we produce and to be aware of the dangers to wildlife and the environment in general, this is a must in most members opinion and rightly so.
