My name is Unclecatfish, I am from TN. I have very recently been thrust into what I believe to be a unique position. I have this friend, and he owns and operates, for the last ten years. a booming business. The nature of the business is that it is a reuse/recycle contractor for an extremely large electronics manufacturer with facilities in almost every country on earth.

Unfortunately, I am forbidden to reveal the name of this manufacturer. My friends business, lets call it "Reruns", receives tons of this electronics companies electronic waste every day. This waste consists of very high and low end consumer electronics and quite a bit of very high end tele communications equipment. There a million reasons why this equipment is sent to Reruns, but thats not important. What is important is that the purpose of Reruns existence is dispose of this ewaste in the absolute safest and most responsible way for the environment as it can be.

One of the obligation Reruns has to this manufacturer is to reuse/re-purpose the waste by assembling/reassembling and reselling the items to consumers, as was its original intent, and to this to factory specifications. If the item can not be re-utilized in this way it then falls into another potential disposal category, such as stripped down to its most basic components and these components either be sent to a landfill or be reused in another way.

ALL of this waste has some amount of precious metals and my friend and I decided we would try to reclaim all or some of these metals for refining and since my father was, on a very small scale, doing this years ago for the purpose of making jewelry, (and because were friends and I needed a job) that I was in charge of the whole "Reclamation Division", So, since my father did it a handful of times in the garage early Sunday mornings and I had watched at least 3 or 4 of those times, I went about ordering the equipment I thought the Reclamation Department needed to be successful. I ordered a couple of beaker starter kits, a couple of small filter bottles, some glass rods and of course, 55 Gallons of Nitric Acid, 55 Gallons of Hydrochloric Acid and 35 Gallons of Hydrogen peroxide oh,and a 50 pound bag sodiummetabisulfate.

I went about my first day and first solo flight much as my father had, gathering my inadequate equipment to reclaim gold from one pound of a certain connector that we both knew to have a high gold content, using the only process I have ever known, The Aqua Regia Process. I got very little gold and coughed and had nasal discharge all day after that. I still have a very large bottle of that first solution because I know the golds there.

For a fresh start I got another pound of that same connector and yesterday set about dissolving and reclaiming the gold again using AR. This time I only took of small portion of the pregnant solution to precipitate from at first. It was what I consider to be a success. I reclamed half a gram of gold from my small sample. Im not sure of its purity level at this point. The rest of the solution is now settling and I will know my full yield from this "run" tomorrow morning.

I am so sorry for the novel I have just written, but I feel like all this had to be explained before I just jump on your site and asking redundant questions and advice, which I will try not to do. I do feel like I am in a unique position to either make a lot of money or walk way with my head held down. I have safety equipment, no hood yet, but my friend will build me a fabulous facility if I can prove to him that it can be done safely and responsibly and profitably of course. Since I have no fume hood, I was relieved to read about the water and marble filter that helps reduce the BRC. I will use it tomorrow. I have no trouble reading for myself and have already started, but if anyone would like to offer any advice on what peice or peices of equipment might be most helpful to me right now or how to expand my operation quickly and within financial reason, it would be greatly appreciated. I really will listen to all advice that may be given and try to see if it will work for me.

Thank you so much, in advance.

If those fumes you inhaled that made you cough were brown fumes from the AR reaction on your metals, Then I would suggest you get in to see your doctor ASAP. You presently stand a chance of DEATH

Be sure to tell the doctor exactly what you inhaled as NOx fumes from AR have a habit of making people DEAD with-in 2 weeks of inhaling them.

Hello unclecatfish70 and welcome.
You say you are willing to do the learning so get started. Read the welcome and then rules of the forum. Then definately read the safety section.
Hoke's book is the next big read which you will find along the way here...FREE

I would guess you introduced yourself to Chlorine gas which will cause severe coughing. Goto the Dr.s ASAP! If you breathed those brown fumes from AR, you need to go with urgency!

All information you will need is here in the forum if you start your journey as outlined. You definately need to walk before running....any other dangerous projects.
The quickest way to get moving while reading is to collect similar materials and if cash is your friend, sell them. You will make money that way as opposed to hurting yourself or others without learning how.

Good luck

B.S.

Study will be your key to success.

HoKe's book and the forum.
Safety section and dealing with waste.
Forums guided tour (general chat).

There is a learning curve that will take time to learn, and a takes a lot of study.
Begin with a more simple process, memory fingers without solder, and work your way up to more complicated processes as you learn through your study.

Welcome to the best place to learn what you are trying to do here.

You have been given very sound advice. I was new to this whole thing not that long ago but I have devoted all and I mean ALL my spare time to reading, experimenting, and reading some more. You have definitely come to the right place to learn so take the advice member's give to you and you will do just fine here. Welcome and I hope everything is OK with you after inhaling those fumes!!

just for you to know that ,chemical burn in the lung will never heal back to 100%,if you loosed 0.01% of you lung that day ,its gone forever.

Does any know if he was ok after breathing in the fumes  , pretty scary to think that a one off ignorant mistake like that could potentially end in death/disability, I am so glad this forum exists as I once too almost jumped into the deep end of things due to over excitement that I would be finally having a go at recovering gold from e waste. After watching a few YouTube videos and reading a few very, and let me emphasise the word "VERY" incomplete and inaccurate walk throughs on other sites I thought I was equipped with all the knowledge and skills I would need to carry out what "seemed" to be a walk in the park recovery process. We'll I got some very bad news before I got to process my laughable stash of half a pound of flash coated pins of motherboards which resulted in me attending a funeral that weekend, getting to the point already, during the four hour drive to get there I decided I might as well do some more reading on gold recovery to pass time as everyone else was asleep, when I stumbled across GRF, I signed up (under a diff account that I forgot the password too) started browsing through the forums and was overwhelmed by the gold (no pun intended) mine of information toward every aspect of this hobby, after having a brief scan through hokes book and looking through the guided tour I felt a bit shattered inside when I realised that this wasn't going to be as easy as others on YouTube made it out to be, but after reading through the safety guides I let out a sigh of relief realising that it was most certainly for my own benefit and my neighbours and friends that I had been deterred away from carrying out a process that would have most likely ended up in my own funeral, so thanks to all those contributing to the forum and all the moderators that want to pull their hair out with frustration at over excited newcomers who sign up and just want to "do it" already, when really they haven't a clue what their doing,so definitely keep at them about reading hoke and reading safety etc, coz I know it sure scared the hell out of me at what could have been.
A year later I still haven't produced my dream button yet, but what I have done is stockpiled more scrap and material that I can work with and studied hokes book back to front and these forums to learn how to recover gold in the easiest/quickest/safest way possible, now I am at the point where I thought I was a year ago and what do you know i just finished processing my second lot of fingers in a/p with everything going perfectly, so uncle catfish I really hope you survived your silly mistake and got a chance to amend your blunder by reading hokes book and taking time to read all this great material that covers pretty much a-z of gold recovery in the one forum, combined with Lazer Steves, GSP, and other members websites, because these guys have got the level experience that we all wish to someday reach. Sorry for writing an essay but just thought I'd add my two cents and once again say thanks to everyones great work and hopefully I too can soon post up pics of my progress.
