Hi guys,
Topic says it all. I recently came into contact with cooporate managers for one of the largest communication companys in my area and am working out a plan to procure a vast warehouse of PCs & servers along with communications devices etc.. Im in over my head far as refining any of it safely as id need a lab at this level but recovery & recycling I can do no prob.

My question is ive read about boardsort.com & a few others to take the components when broken down. Sounds like what I want so my question is when shipping is involved is USPS the only option?
I could literally do pallets of hundreds of lbs. verses small boxes at a time so I need some input from the big refiners here about how to save overhead on shipping large quantitys.

What would you do in my position I guess.
Thanks in advance guys.

Dave

You can pay and arrange the shipping and go with Chris at boardsort.com or you can have Mario at http://www.cashforcomputerscrap.com/current-pricing arrange the shipping and then take the shipping charges out of what you make off of the sale of the product. Mario can arrange for one box up to gaylord boxes.

If this is a truly large telecom company, I can surmise that the opportunity may have competition
and the big recycling boys are on the deal as well. I am sure that you know your customer but you
may want to see who they are already doing business with as it will give you a framework to work from
when you craft your plan.

Hi Dave!
I was breaking down a massive amount of pc's, and other equipment, received boxes of memory, cards and harddrives. After harvesting the fingers and other refinable components I rented a 14ft. U-Haul truck and drove 6400 lbs. of boards, laptops etc. to boardsort in Eastlake Ohio. It was very profitable. Took Amtrak back to Milwaukee.

It will cost more than freight. The more pallets you ship at one time the cheaper it is. I've shipped from Cali to Ohio and it cost about the same to ship one pallet as it did to ship 7. The real cost in shipping is the cost is the pickup and the drop off. If you keep this to a minimum then you should be good. If your board buyer ships a lot and are willing to get quotes for you that will save you too. The brokers discount for repeat shippers.

When you say huge amounts, I'm thinking by the semi truck load. If you are only talking 4-6000 pounds at a time, you'd be better off renting a truck and hauling it yourself. When you start getting up in the 10,000 pound range on boards, then most of the time the buyer will send the truck, you have to load it. If you do indeed get this job, you may want to think about buying a truck of your own as you are going to have to transport the stuff from the customer to your shop/location.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
I knew getting the e-scrap to the refiner would be the main issue & from my understanding I have no competetor as of yet. I don't think they had reached that level yet to be concerned about recycling just tossing everything that didn't work in one location & deal with it layer from what one man told me. I may end up cherry picking the CPUs & gold fingers for Ebay then just storing the boards till I have a large amount for 1 pickup. The steel & plastic I can get rid of easily.

Ill let you know if a deal gets worked out by end of July. Fingers are crossed I can use a 2nd Winter endevour to suppliment slow dows at that time of yr.

For only a 100 miles I'd rent a 25 footer local and return it to the same place. Cheapest way to rent one.

I think he was saying it's only a hundred miles more than Artart is from NE Ohio.

If you guys think that boardsort is the best you can do then you really need to start exploring options. You can do far far better than selling to those guys. Stop using them as the benchmark for commercial ventures fellas because if you are dealing in large quantities they are way off the mark. They are fine for the smaller guy but there are better options for a commercial venture.

If it's telecoms boards you are looking at then it's even more essential that you think outside the box.

Thank you Jon, you took the words from my finger tips.

Hi!
How much did the U-Haul cost? I wanted a truck for a one way drop off, Racine, Wi to Eastlake, Ohio. The place near me said a place two towns away from my destination needed the 14ft truck and if I returned it there they'd knock 30% off. I'm recalling from memory. Believe it was just under $400 for the truck and may-be $200 for fuel, $80 for Amtrak Cleveland/Chicago and $28 Hiawatha Chicago to Racine.
Part of why I took it there myself was for the adventure of the trip.

Sorry for the late reply! Worked long days and just saw your reply with the question.

no problem art, was just curious was all.! was a neat idea and i bet a heck of an adventure to boot!

Had a great experience at Boardsort! However cash for scrap in Ohio acted like they may want to cheat me with my truck. wouldn't allow me to watch the tally of my property and wanted to do it in secret. I don't trust them at all. You do as you please I;m just giving my opion of how I felt they do business.

Sounds like a dream with many possibilities.

First you need to get an idea how many of those pesky CRTs they need to get rid of. They'll probably cost you.
Then you need to determine the volume you can physically handle. Hopefully you can get cheap help or have the time to handle every piece of equipment. Me being an abused 52, I probably couldn't do it alone anymore. Unless I had a year or more as a guess.

Sounds like they had storage and are finally looking at how much wasted space they are paying which is good. Use that in your presentation.
How long do you have their storage for before they need it empty? This determines your game plan.

Get an idea how many desktops are there and how many you can strip and scrap the "quick stuff" like metal, wire etc. You need storage for sorted boards just from them which you need work out.

I'd guess I can go through 25 desktops a day and make piles needing more time on and scrap the crap as I call it. By 25/day, I mean get them to my place to work on, strip and sort. Then on to cut wires, snip, cut, or otherwise extract what I want to cherry pick.

You need to guesstimate the logistics of each type or equipment from first touch to disposed of in some manner. This will give you an idea of a time frame and amount of labor needed as well as space required before you have enough to get sold and gone.

Building a game plan from start to finish will help you create a "presentation" for why they should give you the task of giving them their space back in a timely manner.

I can continue with my type of attack plan but that'd turn into a book.

Good luck and hopefully you get what you dream of from this project.

B.S.

PS. Redemtech is a company that removes and recycles completely but they charge out the wazzoo for all of the mess. Look them up if you can as research, not as a potential use.
