Hi all, I'm Mark.
I'm in Los Angeles but in 2 weeks from now I'll be living in Chicago.
I'm entering the gold business. I've acquired 12 oz of mixed scrap jewelry in one week's time, this being done on a part time basis. Full-time, I can acquire 40 oz per week.
As soon as I get to Illinois, I'm going to register as a business with the county and obtain an employer tax ID...even hire an assistant soon. I'll be doing great then.

Today I just found out I can't just send my lot to some refiner. They'll give me like 80% even though they advertise at 98% (already talked to a some sleazy salesmen). Can't have that. For this first 12 oz lot, I need at least 95%, no shenanigans (I've tested and weighed everything thoroughly). Ideally, I'd like to have the lot melted into a bar and assayed independently. Can anyone give direction with regards where to sell this lot or get it smelted/assayed? I'd really appreciate it! I'm pretty open to most of the USA geographically speaking, because in 2 weeks, I'll be driving from LA to Chicago. I can choose several routes anywhere really...Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Texas, etc.. I'd even drive a little extra, to Michigan, to do something with this lot.

Thanks

You are new here, and though your message was a bit out of line on the expectations, at least you are not demanding answers and expecting everything for nothing (though getting close...... ;)

A few observations;
1. you don't have enough material for any refiner to get excited about. The 'big boys' work on dozens of pounds at a time. (The 'backyard' folks that are on this forum can't afford to take small lots - typically, if your total yield won't be at least 15g of .999, the load is not worth messing with - they would have to tell you their parameters) If you have 12 oz (presuming, since you are new, you are using the US form of measurement, not the standard used in weighing pure gold, though you should know that in weighing pretty much anything with PMs, the use of gram is more typical), and since you say "mixed", we have to presume "10k or better" (since you say you have tested it) - that's somewhere around 4.5 toz (the standard way to measure gold), which would be worth upwards of $7,500. Not a small amount - if you really came up with that in one week, please, do tell how (we won't call the police.....)

2. you said yourself "For this first 12 oz lot....." - and just who do you think will "JUMP" at that, when you 'demand' 95% of the gold value? Let's play 'turn the tables' (how I do every negotiation - the only way I've ever found to make sure I'm not asking too much, or too little....) and just tell me, if you are the guy with the experience, tools, etc. that can process this out for you to make something salable, would you do all that for 5% of the value? If you will, I can assure you would have all kinds of business, but you could never stay in business because the cost of the chemicals to process small lots will often exceed that, not to mention anything for your time, knowledge or efforts. For 12 US oz of 10k or better, it may be nearing profitable, but few will process at that. Typically, the folks on the forum will only process from 'the take' - whatever comes out, not what you think it is worth (after all, there is a slight possibility that your testing is not 100%????)

3. you state that you will be getting 40 oz per week in your new location. That's some lofty goals and I wish you all the best on that. Once you prove yourself in that business, you will be finding refiners on this site happy to assist you a couple times a month even.

4. you state that you have tested and weighed everything - and, just how, as an admitted new-to-the-business person, is it that you can be so sure of your testing procedure and weights? I've tested hundreds of pieces and still make the occasional mistake. Certainly when just starting out, I had nearly 20% of the pieces that I misjudged. If you have such a system of perfection (in order to qualify for 95% payout, it had better be perfect!), please share that with the forum - I'm sure many would appreciate step-by-step procedures (I know, I would).

5. One thing you need to learn - "melting" is not usually a good idea as a start (though it may be, depending on the material and amount, etc.). There are many, many posts on this forum about how to process all kinds of material. you should use the search function and learn - then, you can determine if the refiner or other buyer you want to work with is giving you the right info or not. Otherwise, just how can you be sure there is a good deal - from either side?

As this was your first post, I'm interested in hearing more about your methods and such, though, please understand that your post has the 'smell' of lofty newbie making large claims and demands. You will be welcome here if you are truly a serious investor/business looking for ideas on best practices, etc. for selling your wares at a reasonable profit. However, I highly encourage you to read more forum posts and learn the 'lingo' of how serious refiners speak - both for getting along well on this forum as well as making your best deal on your materials.

If you get a business license you can get more for your lot. If you are able to put up second hundred ounces a week you can get very good rates. But the first thing you might think about doing is creating a business so that you can sell to someone like NTR. Once you have your business license in hand, it opens up many more options.

For this first 12 oz lot, I need at least 95%, no shenanigans (I've tested and weighed everything thoroughly). Ideally, I'd like to have the lot melted into a bar and assayed independently.

Most refiners take their reputation very serious. When you demand 95% and then say no shenanigans, it doesn't inspire people to help you. This is always a problem with refining. The person who owns the material believes, no matter what they are told, if they are watching you step by step, they believe their material has x amount of .999 gold and that's what they are expecting. Anything less and the refiner is accused of stealing. And there are a lot of refineries that will rip you off if you don't properly represent your melt. You might want to search for how to represent your melt on this forum, somewhere there is an excellent primer on it. Regardless, I know you didn't intend to offend or put anyone off, but starting out with the shenanigans comment in a post asking for help is a little counter productive. Your only real option is to hopefully find someone willing to refine your gold who is working out of their home. But think for just one minute what it takes to refine your karat jewelry. First, they have to own enough silver to inquart your material. Meaning they will have to add enough silver to your material so that 3/4 of it is silver so it can then be parted. Next they have to have and use Nitric Acid to dissolve the silver, then they have to reclaim the silver used. Then the gold has to be refined from that point. You are talking about time, effort, energy, wear and tear on equipment and the list goes on and on. Although your lot is not that bad for someone just starting, it doesn't leave much room for profit, for a home refiner. If you are paying 5% to the refiner you are really talking about paying them around 350-450 dollars, dependent upon your material. For the small refiner, a 750 ml bottle of Nitric Acid is going to cost anywhere from 35-50 dollars alone.

You might want to look into doing this yourself. Or at least read about it. If you want quality work and a end product that you can easily sell then you might consider stepping up to the plate and doing it for 90%. 10% is a fairly common percentage for toll refining, which is what you are looking to do.

Can anyone give direction with regards where to sell this lot or get it smelted/assayed?

I heard there are places in NY that will give you 95+% spot, not sure how true that is. Maybe you should look at gold buyers in LA, I know the competition is fierce down your way.

Without a business license, you are going to be hard pressed to get 95% from anyone. You might find someone willing to toll refine for you on the forum, and there are a lot of really honest and good refiners here. That's probably your best bet honestly, but you might want to think about asking for 90%. It's when you try to squeeze a refiner hard for every penny you can squeeze, that some refiners start being dishonest. If you are paying a 10% toll refining fee you are probably going to be a lot less likely to make yourself the victim of theft.

welcome to the forum markymark.

I'm not sure what the other to are talking about.

You want a refiner to buy your K scrap and payout 98%. Well I think you should be able to do better than that. with 12Toz of mixed K scrap that at the low end (10K) will be 4.75 TOz pure Au you should get 98.5%. You won't have refiners falling over you but they will write you a cheque. As far as melting and getting an assay done this is a common suggested way of doing K scrap on the forum. melting stirring and taking a pin sample is well covered and recommended. It is even recommended to drill holes on your bar and send that out for assay. this lets the refiner know that you have done one. This is also well covered on the forum. You want to know what you have before you send it out.

The biggest problem you will have is buying gold in Chicago. Believe it or not this is also covered on the forum.

If you don't want a relationship with a refiner than on this board you can find a buyer that pays 96% Barren Realms 007 is one that advertises his payout. http://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=84&t=10124&start=20

their are others too they just don't advertise.

If you can make it work that's great don't let some of this funky bunch get you down.

I use this refiner with no problems http://www.hitechpmr.com/Home.aspx?i41s41 ask for Miguel A. Rosas he's great.

I have 3 clients from Chicago. You won't like the market there, at least not if your a small guy without contacts to local government and contacts to OTHER organizations. As long as you're just buying little bits here and there you will be alright, but sooner or later you will draw attention from the folks whose pockets you are taking money out of. Some people take this game very seriously!

No worries! :) I'm not going to take any Chicagoians' market share. My method entails buying from an untapped market. Thanks for the comment though.

Eric, thanks for your advice. For this first lot, I will send it to a reputable refiner. In the future, I'll probably go with melting and getting my own assay done. Just gotta get the first few lots turned over and I suppose then I'll have enough capital to invest in more equipment.

Thanks Scott. I'm taking your advice. Today I sent in my application for a business license in my home county in Illinois. Also, I was able to open a business account with Bank of America. Tomorrow, I'm going to register with the IRS for an EIN as well as with the Illinois RS.

MMJ, thanks for giving me so much feedback. I greatly appreciate it! I apologize for coming off with too high of expectations. I know I'm new and have a lot to learn. I know I'll get better at this as time goes by.
As for more precise weights and measures it's 15.5 dwt 8k, 77 dwt 10k, 143 dwt 14k, 5 dwt 18k. Removed all stones big enough to grab with a needle nose. As for testing, I used the acid test on stone with needle file, twice for each piece. Also, I tested each piece with a Mizar ET 18 to confirm. I'll probably do another round of testing before I send them out. As for weighing, I have access to a scale that goes to 5 decimal places. It's super accurate :)
I know I probably come off as a lofty newbie. Well I admit it, I am a newbie! lol. As for my goal of 40oz a week. that's sure is lofty. It's good to make hard to reach goals though. Shoot for the moon and land among the starts. I believe in myself and am taking this very seriously. Again, I'm really thankful for your comments and am glad to be a part of this forum.
Lastly, my methods...sorry. it's a secret.

markymark, that's one of the best second posts around - with data and understanding of why questions came as they did, and also (perhaps the most important part for anyone) intelligence and obvious study.

It's going to be nice having you around.
