Morning all! Super new to all of this and stumbled on to this site a few hours ago. Seems to be a huge amount of knowledge and expertise here which is great!

So why did I join? Well I'm interesting in refining gold/silver from scrap to fine ingots of each type (mainly silver I think at the moment due to funds and finds). I'm at the very start of my journey but already see that the chemical side of processing isn't for me, I don't fancy working with those types of chemicals for safety reason so I think I will focus on the dry methods (cuppelation?) Would love any recommendations on guides/books etc that I can start reading.

Going to have a scroll through the boards now and look forward to speaking with you soon!

Welcome aboard our little ship of chemical reactions and dealing with the metals.
With study it all gets simpler and begins to come together, as with any adventure getting started can be the hardest, stick with it, and soon you become a veteran experienced sailor.

It is all about moving electrons from one place to another, whether we use chemicals or heat and under differing environmental conditions or in a chemical-flux environment to help drive the chemical reactions under heat or to drive fusion processes like smelting, or cupellation (moving electrons oxidizing or reduction of the elements)...

With a pure metal material like silver, and if it is all about moving electrons around then you may want to look into electrolysis, in the beginning as you learn to use heat or chemicals to drive reactions or move those electrons of those little atoms...

Thanks for that! I've seen electrolysis for removing rust etc from things but hadn't realised the same could be done for silver etc. Added to the learning list! Thank you.

Welcome to the world of magnificent knowledge.

I share your concern about using chemicals, since I am on the same idea that less chemichals = less complications, therefore i use mainly mechanical separation up until one point....the problem is that if you want to purify your metal, it is almost impossible not to cross path with any chemichals (fumes, acids, etc..).

So whatever your goals and ambitions are, first and foremost, visit the safety section.

Have fun and be safe,

Pete.
