First off, this forum is great - I've learned quite a bit already, and sure glad I'm doing research first, before I try anything... boy would I have wasted a lot had I done this the other way around ;)

My question is this: I know where to get HCL and Peroxide, but I've noticed getting Nitric is quite expensive. It seems to run about $1/ounce, plus that much again in shipping (hazmat).

I'm curious if you guys still tend to buy it, and if so, where... or do you use the oft repeated process to make it? It just seems like making it is a bit of a crap shoot too, so I'm not sure which way makes the most sense.

Thanks!

I only pay a little over $10 a gallon for Nitric Acid. However I have to drive about 300 miles round trip to get it. There are several plating shops only about 10 miles from me that buy it by the barrel but they will not sell it. If I planned on using a lot of it I would buy it by the 55 gallon barrel. It will only cost you about $5 a gallon but there is a little over $400 deposit on the first barrel.

Hi James,

Yes thanks very much for putting me onto this group. I have already found some very good reading. Looks like some people that are doers and not just talkers. That makes a big difference in the quality of information you can pick up.
