Hi all I'm new to the gold refining bug, after relentlessly badgering company's I've been offered the chance to purchase 3 metric tonnes of complete motherboards ram and cpus still attached for 850gbp, so was wondering if any one could advise me whether I would gain any profit or would it be a loss I heard somewhere that 1 metric ton of e waste holds nearly the same gold than in 17 metric tons of gold ore!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated btw this forum rocks! Regards

After just having picked only 8 motherboards, I can tell you 3 metric tons is going to be very time consuming. Took me almost 3 weeks to reduce 8 full computers down to all the separate parts for processing and recycling. I also have a full time job and two college courses on the side, so I only pick gold on my short breaks. Since you only have the motherboards, it's a much simpler process, but I would definitely find a faster way to do it than what I used. I was using a 'painters tool' and a hammer to shear the components off the board. I can't imagine doing it that way with 3 tons of boards. In fact, I'm new to this as well and not very efficient yet. If someone offered me that much scrap at this point, I'd probably have to turn it down or put it in storage.

There are a few people in this forum who deal with gold ore. I can't speak to that comparison, but it sounds a bit high to me. I would think gold ore would have way more gold than computer scrap.

Search the forum for yield estimates. A few of the members have, and continue to collect data and run numbers looking for an accurate gold yield estimate for different types of computer components. Those threads may give you a rough idea of how much gold you can expect from the scrap. If the expected yield is enough gold to pay for the scrap and the amount of time and effort you will invest, the rest is profit.

Again, I'm no expert. I'm a noob as well.

Translated to American measurements and dollars:

[stt]25463.39[/stt] 6613.86 pounds (3 metric tons)
$1,344.53 (850 GBP)

So that's [stt]$.05[/stt] $.20 [stt](yes, 5 cents)[/stt] a pound?

(Still) Sounds too good to be true to me.

Just the boards alone, without RAM and CPU, sell for $3.85 a pound here.

What am I missing?

EDIT: Had the weight wrong.

cjcollyer,

Here is my idea on this, recovery and refining of electronic scrap is not easy, you can learn to recovery and refine some of the parts, we call it cherry picking (picking the best fruit), most of the metals, are not what we go after, and these may actually add up in value, as the computers are made of many metals.

Buyer and commercial refiners are recovering the metals you will not be able to; they use methods you would not be able to use, so they could buy materials and make a profit where you would not be able to, if your plan was to recover and refine the metals from these.

If you can buy these and sell them at a higher price than you bought them for then I believe you may profit, you would have to have the market already set up, and Know what your buying and what you can sell.

You may also have to separate materials or have other labor, or costs involved like shipping.

After that maybe you could also cherry pick some from what you bought,

Many times it may be easier to think of how to do something, than it is to actually do it.

How did you come across this company? Where are they located? What are the payment terms? Have you viewed the product? All questions that need to be answered before you go ahead with a deal like this.

It sounds like a scam to me too. That is deal is too good to be true.

I wonder why they are charging, unless they are worried about your ability to haul it all away, or where it might end up. Don't most large companies normally have to pay to dispose of this stuff?

£850 for 3 metric tonne .....yes we have been offered boards for this price the going rate for a tonne of boards is just under £6000 if i could buy genuine boards for that price i would be a millionaire...if you get genuine boards i will pay you £5000 a tonne
cheers steve
