Hey,

OK so I have cam across about 15 Computers all from the late 80's to mid 90's I think. I was searching for gold pin references on here. I attached a picture. Are the gold colored pins in the upper left gold plated or are those tin/copper only reason I ask is because the old PC's seem to be cover in them and I did not want to waste my time.

Regards,
Ross

Yes the pin's should be gold plated. You will need a lot of them to make it worth you while to process. The jumper's used on the pin's should be gold plated as well.

On all of your boards Scratch a little area of the GREEN SOLDER MASK and see if it is copper or GOLD color underneath the traces.  Cut the fingers off and place the board in a shallow glas or plastic tub with HCL just covering the bottom to digest the solder,,, then you con pull your pins out   no problem...

be sure to rinse well to get ..rid of the acid on the board ..

also don't forget to save all of the chips from your boards;;;; They may containe PMs

P.S. forgot In computers and electronics ( The older the better for gold )

Is muaratic acid a high enough concentration for the solder mask? I believe it is but just want to check. Also I am actually partly color blind and can barely tell the difference in copper or gold. Can I just do an acid test?

Lazersteve has a video on his site showing how to remove the solder mask. Here is a link to his site:

That board does look like it has gold traces. If it does,I would cut the fingers off.Just leave them until your strip the solder mask and process them with the rest of the board.

Hey,

Thanks guys for the responses and great link to that video thanks I have alot PCBs like that. But I am still waiting for some test tubes like i believe lasersteve said somewhere to use first till I get the reactions (color changes) and feel comfortable doing the process. would be a shame to walk before i crawl and have to botch some good scrap.

Ross

You are on the right track and will do well here if you understand that concept.
