All, just a question or two. This first pic is from a redundant power supply that my girlfriend found at her work. I'm wondering what the silver things are and what their purpose is.

I bought two Getac rugged military computers. Imagine my surprise at the keyboard I found inside!

I decided to try a chip with the weight still on the back. Is that an Al heat sink? Ended up with some interesting runescapes!

They are indeed aluminum heat sinks. Not a lot of values in a UPS. Mostly steel, aluminum, copper and some brass in the rear plug-ins. Look at lower post about APC UPS's.
 
Power supplies (PS) are low in PM's butt .... have a look at any small boards connected to the main PS board, experiance shows that these are usually secured to the main board with gold plated pins, and dont forget the silver solder.
