I have a quantity of scrap silver that I would like to sell to a refiner. I am London based but would consider refiners based elsewhere in England (Birmingham seems the mostl ikely alterantive). Although I am non trade, I really don't want to deal with a middleman but would like to go to somebody like Johnson Mathey or Engelhard of old, who know longer seem to carry out this sort of refining any more.

Any recommendations for someone who won't screw me over ??

The big boys who operate in the same space as JM will not work with you unless you are registered, which requires VAT registration, Companies House, as well as other personal documents. There are players that operate at the level below which may or may not require VAT registration.

I am happy to tell you who I work for and you can do your research about us, but not in open forum (unless anyone tells me I am breaking any forum rules)

I am not VAT registered. Perhaps you could send me a PM ?

You should have no trouble selling your silver anywhere, you don't have to have a vat number or be a business. I'm not part of this company but try The Bullion Room in Birmingham 0121 515 5999, if it's hallmarked or easily tested by XRF you should get 90% + of the spot price.

Sorry Nick, I wasn't trying to infer that all traders require VAT reg, but the bigger boys who are trading where JM were operating in the market do.

Can I clarify why a VAT number is reuqired by those who require it ? Is it a security / money laundering issue, or just to keep the man on the street out ?

I think its a tax thing.

You can deal directly with Cookson, they produce bullion but their margins are pretty fat, I think they would pay you 80% spot. Also don't bother asking ATS bullion (savoy court, london) as they will just refer you to Cookson.

Williams55,

You are starting to post like a spammer who forgot to add his hyper-links.
What's up with that?

Jim
That's an excellent observation, Jim. I strongly advise this individual to lose the notion that he can post veiled spam on the board.

I've noticed that some of these guys will post flowery, meaningless comments on many threads, ending with their sig line that includes a link. Makes it perfectly obvious that their sole purpose is to drop their link---that they have nothing of value to add to a conversation. That's not what's happening in this case, but I expect that's going to change unless it's nipped in the bud.

So long as his comments remain free of a link, I'm ok with them, but he'll be banned immediately if that changes.

Harold
