i saw that both ARA and Midwest both pay 90% of the silver value for sterling. do any other refiners pay more pay more than that?

About a pound! So 10 percent of that leaves the refiner with about 1.34 ounces if it is in fact sterling at 925 at a value of about $14 per troy oz leaving the refiner with a whopping $18.88 for melting and assaying and refining the lot. Maybe he can go to Cancun with the left over profits from this lot. How little do you feel is proper for a refiner to make?

That is indeed the problem with silver, it requires large quantity batches to make minimum wage.
