I have read a number of posts about the Shor refining system for gold. It seems there is distaste for the system due to its cost. However, I can't help but wonder if this extra expense is offset by the fact that the shor system uses less toxic chemicals. If it is a much safer system, I would not mind paying more. Is the Shor system safer, like they claim on their website?

thanks

I have no distaste for the shor system. and as far as less toxic chemicals where did they get them that I cant get cheaper? as far as a tool to refine gold in I can find what i need to put them together at my local second hand store, to me its like a company that takes common information they have found use it to build a small version bag a chemical like table salt, call it some other name and sell them for allot of money, they have a right to do that. I have a right not to buy it and study and do the same thing cheaper, and for most of us this is a hobby or extra income and that money saved can make the differece of this hobby paying for itself or at least us being able to afford to do it,
that said anybody who wants to buy a shore machine and there special chemical if thats your choice great,

I expect that the idea of safer chemicals isn't true. Many of the toxins developed in refining come from the dissolved metals themselves, or so it seems. Perhaps Lou can address this issue. I am not a chemist.

The harsh reality is that many of the procedures you read on this forum are very similar, if not identical, to those used by the magic gee wiz kits. You do gain the advantage of paying exorbitant prices for the reagents, however. Maybe that's a plus for some folks. I find it abhorrent.

Not a single chemical is toxic if it is used properly and in the right conditions with the correct equipment and precautions.

Gold and platinum are both poisonous by ingestion, and are contact sensitizers. Nitric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric are highly corrosive and the fumes of some of them can present a serious threat to life if one is careless.

The Shor system avoids using corrosive chemicals, but it's hardly a cure all.

I bought one years ago and found it very restrictive in iit's use. I think it is still in my garage someplace.

It does off gas but does scrub. The chemicals are still dangerous. Batches are limited to specific amounts. There is always a residue that you inquart from batch to bach making calculation of yields nearly impossible. This leads to a stigma that there is a loss per batch.

I found myself using AR to clean up the residual from each batch and asking myself why I even bother with it.

Hey Guys...please..do not laugh at me but.....I bought a Shor Cell for silver refining that I could not make it work!!!!..it cost me more than 500 USD and ,of course,I did this stupid thing before I joined this wonderful forum.

Reading Mrs. Hoke´s book, reading all the posts that you all have written and having your wise advices then nobody needs Shor Systems.
