I have a client with some slip rings from old missile radar systems. I dissolved them in nitric, and got a deep ruby red solution. I took a sample and dissolved it in AR and tested it wit DGM and it resulted in a yellow precipitate and confirmed Pd.

I added Hcl and dropped the Ag out and I plan to add zinc it drop the Pd.

My question is has anyone refined these rings? What is the ratio of Ag:pd? I was reading that for it(Ag\Pd alloy slip rings) to be used as a contact it had to be 60% Pd to 40% Ag.

Also would a XRF gun tell me the composition.

The rings consist of a front ring and a back ring both are plated on the front and back. The back of the rings look like they have gold washed on them not plated like the front.
The starting weight of the rings was 35g with the red ring still attached. They weigh 28g a set. I got 2# of them in today. Waiting on zinc to know what the PMG weight is. They test (+) for both Pd and Pt[stt]I forgot to weigh them after removing the red ring.[/stt] The resulted in .25g of Au on each set of rings.

Any help on them would be appreciated.

In the 60's, I worked for a company that made slip rings for the military. I worked in the plating dept., where we electroformed pure silver and gold slip rings. Those that you have look like silver. Sometimes, we plated them 1/16" thick, or more. Good item probably.
