My husband and I have started small scale gold mining in Tarqwa, Ghana.
No, this is not some weird scam, it's all legit.

We are planning to export the gold into Canada and researching that now.

Do refineries buy raw 24 carat gold flakes?

Any advice you have for me would be most appreciated,

I expect that you won't have 24K material. It's found in nature, but it is not common. Most gold is alloyed with silver, and may even contain copper. Don't set your sights on pure gold and you won't be disappointed.

Trying to export gold dust out of W@est africa is not a smart thing. Honestly you need to be able to have enough base product to melt this using a small scale miller process to make one kg or 2.5 kg bars. Africa business is all done in kg bars the biggest coming out of Ghana are chinese and they weight 25 kg.
THe local clowns coming back and forth from ghana always melt this stuff into jewlrey and wear it to the states they also carry out buttons in their pockets. Its alwys entertainment with these guys coming into the states.

As a small scale producer they will try to force you to deal with ther export counsel who has their own agenda of assay and export. They want to force you to sell to them. Alas they have a supply contract with a group of nice guys in Switzerland. To do this to Canada you need a minimum of 1500 to 2000 pounds of clean gold and you have to have enough cash USD behind you to charter a minimum of an old GIII the most common used is a GIV, GV, G550 the currrent rate on a charter from west africa to canada is about 140K for a empty leg rerouted and a full charter can cost up to $180K. I know your thinking I am nuts.

If you try to walk it well I can tell you Lufthansa,KLM/AIr France, United, Virgin etc will not ship it cargo and they are not keen about it on the plane. A freight forwarder will talk it but they wont walk it. G4S and Brinks also talk a good game but after a run around they say we only deal with major mines. If you are tryign to do this very small scale you have to fly your behind first class should be around 8500 a ticket I would guess today. You have to have proper paperwork and you ask for a private customs screening you are crazy to show a bar in the inspection line. The case never leaves your side and really it takes 2 people to do this first class from west africa to say Canada.

Now that yoru to north america then you begin the marketing process of selling your kilo bar and its easy to find a buyer for clean gold. If you think your gonna have a buyer lined up for gold dust well people here dont belive it or they are maybe a fake/never done this. Its just point blank no one will deal with it in north america untill its landed thru customs in the usa or canada. They also dont belive the anourmous amount of offers for 5 metric tons of bars none of it. The business is being done and real but it takes alot of cash and i mean green usd to do it. You have to have the weight of gold to make the logistics worth it or its a waste of time.

Thats just some basic idea on how this is done I am not very smart but my 2 cents. I hope it gives you and idea of the task and save you some time and money.
