Would be best if you knew the exact makeup of the pewter though I assume?
Getting started it may be more important that the stannous chloride works. Later, making it consistently can help determine, to a slight degree, how much gold is in the solution. For this the use of standard gold solutions and consistently made stannous could be more important. The way I work most often, knowing the gold is there or not is more important than knowing about how much is there.
 
Hello everyone in this forum specially the moderators. I have the same question about stannous chloride but not from solders from the store but from the boards. They say that newer PCB's now uses mostly tin in the solders so the question is can I melt those and use it to make tin chloride. I hope this forum can guide me through this.

Actually I came across this forum in my research on recovery and refining of PM's from e-waste before starting any experiments.

Any Tin can be used, there might be an issue with Gold already in the Tin recovered from PCB's
Ordinary Tin fro Solder should be easy to find any way.

I have a question/comment.
I accidentally dropped some stannous chloride into a beaker of gold in solution. Just a drop. Instantly there was a dark black fog, streak, swirl in the beaker.
Question....why can't a person just add a single drop of stannous chloride in a beaker to test for gold?
Comment...when I accidentally did this, I began to smell rotten eggs. And the gold precipitated without any issue.
 
Stannous directly in AR defeats the purpose of refining in that it introduces tin as a contaminant into your AR. Plus, it won’t show PGM’s that may be in the AR, that often can show up as a “rainbow” of various colors. By using small samples to test, the variety of colors are more easily noticed, and can even point you in the right direction as to what other metals of value may be involved.
 
To test for gold in solution, I normally use a Q-tip. Just a quick dip into the solution, then just a drop of stannous chloride on the Q- tip.
While using a Q-tip is often used to test solutions, problems arise when the solution you are testing is dirty. Dirty solutions can mask a positive or a negative stannous test. This is especially true with dirty solutions from aqua regia and e-scrap. Plus, a Q-tip has a plastic stick which the cotton swab is wound on to. Recovering values from these used Q-tips requires burning these often smoke intensive plastic sticks. And finally, a Q-tip can easily absorb a milliliter of solution, for a concentrated solution this can be costly.

I much prefer to use strips cut from filter paper. If you add a single drop of solution to the filter paper you will use much less gold bearing solution for the test. A milliliter is composed of 20 drops. (or at least some nerd who had nothing better to do says based on empirical evidence!). Anyway, the most important benefit of using filter paper for stannous testing is a dirty solution placed on the filter paper will diffuse outward from where you place the drop. But the dirt often remains with at the center point while the carrier liquid (which contains the gold) moves outward. If you place a drop of stannous chloride a short distance from the solution drop being tested, it too will diffuse outward. The benefit is the area where the two diffusing drops merge will produce a test on clean solution and is much easier to judge the result. A second benefit from testing on paper is the papers can easily be burnt for recovery of the PM's contained.
