Stannous test solution

I know that many people dissolve tin in HCl to get stannous test solution. I have purchased a 1/4 pound bottle of Stannous Chloride, anhydrous and was wondering what do I have to do to make it into the standard test solution everyone uses? Can it even be done? Do I mix it with water or HCl?

if it is stannous chloride crystals, dissolve in distilled water. dissolve all that will dissolve in 20 ml of water at a time as needed.
