Hello how is everyone

I have a problem
we did an 18k test on a ring the line disappeared but then came back
the buyer said he had never seen that before
is there anything that could make the gold go in to solution
and come back out
Thanks steyr223

Did you see it? Was it gold in color or was it sort of whiteish silvery or blue silvery when it came back?

hey palladium how's business
Thanks for the response

I personally did not see it
It's my partners ring
I called him and asked i
he said it came back a whitish silvery
but not like silver does as he is familiar
With what silver looks like
Thanks

As a gold buyer, it's too expensive making a mistake on 18k. If you have any doubts, use the plumb gold sticks that come with most gold test kits. Rub the 18k standard next to the unknown item. Make two rubs of the unknown.

Then put the 18k and 14k acids on the rub. Compare the behavior of the rubs. If anything is out of place, don't buy it.

There’s a test I do with silver to test the purity of sterling or if it is plated. I use18k testing solution. I take a piece and bear down hard and make 4 lines on my stone. I then take the 18k solution and run a line across all 4 scratches. The nitric in the 18k will take the silver and the hcl will precipitate it out as silver chloride. Depending on how much silver chloride is present will determine the silver content. If the first 2 hold and the last couple disappear completely or some I know its plated. If all 4 hold then I can look at the marks and guess roughly the silver content. It’s only meant as a guide! I’m wondering if the item could have been 14k or something else and the 18k dissolved the gold and what you are seeing come back is the silver chloride? Did you test it with 10k and 14k?
