I've had this piece for awhile, just haven't had the heart to tear it down, yet....
It's an AMPEX FR 1300 14-channel Flight Recorder - from a DC-10 (or so I'm told, but there are stickers on it that say it is from a training center....)
Actually, I have TWO of them, one that WORKS and this one, that I've started tearing apart (it powers on, but doesn't actually respond to the buttons).
These are from the '50s, rescued from the back of a garage by the son of the man that worked on them. He sold me a LOT of really nice cards other than those that go with this system (about 30 lbs of old DEC and other, what I think are mainframe, pieces).
These cards have no chips on them, but look at that one on the bottom left - it is 'stacked' with resistors and transistors - a HAND MADE IC????
Pretty cool - I really hate to rip it apart, but the two of them take up a LOT of room on my bench and they do weigh over 100 lbs each, so I think even if I could find someone wanting to collect it, the shipping would be just too much!
Anyway, I thought we could keep it here for posterity - at least, in picture form!
