Before I start anything else i wanted to learn to make stannous chloride .

Would 95tin 5% silver work or does it need to be tin/ lead?

Is there any better way to get tin?

I remember when I was a kid solder was super cheap. Those days are gone.

I tried the search function. no luck.

It would not be tin/lead. The point they are shooting for is "lead free" solder.
It will most likely contain antimony that will just settle to the bottom and not affect anything.

I really did try the search. I didn't want anyone to think i was wasting their time. There was a lot of posts about stannous chloride but none that i read answered my question. There were very few posts on tin but most of the posts that came up for tin had nothing to do with tin.

I'm sorry but I actually asked my question backwards. I wanted to know if 95tin 5 lead would work or does it have to be tin/ silver. Thats what i meant to say. The reason i asked that is a relative of mine has an old role of solder in his basement and he says the the label reads 95% tin 5 percent lead. He thinks it weight 3 lbs. If that would work then I have plenty.

so would the 5% lead solder work or is the lead going to ruin things?

I wouldn't use it. Testing with stannous is too important to have any possible problems.

I think Lazer Steve still sells pure tin on his website.

Thanks. I did find some info on how hard it is to remove lead from tin so I don't need to ask that one. Thought I might have enough free tin for a life time.
