I'm looking to purchase several 25 - 75 lb lots of Fe-Nd-B magnets for a refining trial to be done by a third party. Magnets attached to brackets are acceptable. Please email photo of the lot that you plan to sell. Price and shipping to be negotiated. Delivery to Detroit, MI, USA.

Please respond off-list to email account [email protected] -- my 'outmail' isn't sending thru this list. I'll be looking at responses within the next few days.

Thank you,

Kinda hard to respond 'off-list' or 'email' when we don't have that info......

As for a picture, mine look a lot like the ones you have in your profile picture.

All from hard drives, mostly vintage (though I don't think the magnets know how old they are... ;0.

You can PM me with an offer - FOB 89130

yes how much for the exact same material, hdd magnet with plate on
your can pv me an answer but you would avoid a lot of trouble just saying it publicaly

13 cents a pound. Mixed right in with the shread steel. It's a shame, as there was a whole 5 gallon bucket full of them that have been sitting in the shop for years now. I'm cleaning house boys, this junk is leaving the building.

These magnets all came from big Hitachi drives that we tore apart for the platters, you know, back when the E-Bay platter craze was going on.

I know one thing, that bucket was crazy heavy.

No price here either.
Oh well, they went to the scrap yard today.
Before scrapping, I would suggest you look on eBay for the 'completed' items (gives some idea what the idiots would pay) - just to see if you might get anything better for it......

Yep, a BUCK A POP!

Seems that price is fairly solid, but you have to sell them a few at a time... - we get dozens a week!

Silversaddle's experience has been exactly the same as mine--except that the local scrapyards won't pay me 'anything' for them, 'cause they consider them a nuisance and downright hazard, getting stuck on the blades of shredders, jamming in the steering knuckles of the loaders, and causing general calamitous mayhem.

And so, I find myself trying to find a remedy, if there is one. I've approached several big-boy smelters, about having them remelted into granules or flakes, before they can be further treated. So far, after dozens of phone calls, I've had one or two nibbles. Most places won't even consider a contract for less than one Ton, min.

My reasonable guess is that the brackets w/ magnets, are no more than %20 magnet, if that. And a quarter of that, will be Nd, so 5% Nd by weight, for a batch of HD magnets, total.

At $75/ lb for Nd, that works out to $3.75 / per lb of HD magnets max obtainable at current prices--about the same as what people are getting for MOBOs from some refiners. And on ebay, I've seen lots of vintage magnets go for many times this--by all means, go for it, if you've got 'em to sell.

I'm offering $1.75 per lb + USPS surface in the US midwest. (I can't afford to pay more for the shipping than I do for the magnets).

Please email me privately at [email protected].

ericm, your being in Quebec means that shipping the US is going to cost a *whole lot*, not to mention customs declarations. I'm interesed in what you've got, I just don't see a way to work things out, ftb.

$2.50 a pound at Metal Exchange in Moulton Al. of coarse they have to be off any steel brackets and it has to be the silver metal magnets.

well? i am still waiting for the answer...

does anyone else know of an actual market for magnet? would be nice to get info

Eric,

I am interested in buying your NdFeB magnets from hdds.
I can pay $2.80 / lb for these magnets without the steel bracket.

The best way to remove the metal bracket is to stick the magne to another magnet placed vertically, take a sharp chisel, place it just between the magnet and the steel bracket, little hit with a hammer and it will come off... Takes around 7 seconds per magnets to process this way, without any force... Forget about the bending thing and breaking the parts with a hammer (just to exhausting)... Just have the magnet you want to process hold vertically, chisel + hammer and its done without breaking the magnet. I will try to post a video about it shortly...

I prefer to buy these magnets demagnetized (just apply any kind of heat to reach 400 degrees) but I will take them magnetized as well.

If anyone else has NdFeB magnets from hard drive disks for sale PM me, I'll buy everything you have...
If shipping from the US, I will pay 100% of your shipping for 10+ pounds lots.

I'm located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

cheers,

Alex

This will sound weird but do they have to be magnetic? If not than a torch will make short work of them heat the back and off they fall.

they will still be some what magnetic but not like they were,

I've used a pocket torch to remove the magnets and they still have the same magnetism as before. The key is to not leave the heat on it too long, but long enough to loosen the glue used to hold it in place, then tap it downwards with a flat head screwdriver. It normally takes me about 10 - 20 seconds per magnet.

As far as using a chisel and hammer, I'd stay away from it because one of two things, or both are more than likely to happen.
1. The magnet is going to break. You may do some without it breaking, but the next thing will likely happen...
2. You get the magnet off without breaking it, but you rip off the chrome plating from the magnet, exposing the magnet showing the dark grey/blackish material. Also, if you want a uniform look, the missing chrome plating will be noticeable.

I've taken quite a few hard drive magnets off of their backings and I can tell you this much, different manufacturers use different amounts of glue/bonding agents to keep the magnets in place. I've had some magnets where the whole underside of the magnet was set on a large amount of glue. Remember, once the magnet is placed on the backings, the glue will spread across the magnet, depending on how much glue was used.

I was selling them on ebay too. Quite a lot of people are buying them. Some for construction of some wall which will hold iron based tools....
I sold like 15 pieces for 5-6 euros.
I have sold couple hundred of them.
