I found a bunch of boards on some old door stop harddrives. They have a bunch of ceramic eeproms (with no window and windows) some you can see gold plate in the window others just look silver. Now my question is do the ceramic eeproms have a better yield than the black plastic flatpacks (Not really sure about the terminology maybe you would call them Ic's anyway when I remove the chips should I keep the ceramic ones seperate? Do you reclaim them the same way as the plastic one's? Pyrolizing then pulverizing? Or do you just break them like the ceramic Cpu's?

break them in the middle exposing the glass chip to the acids.i use left over solutions (like AP) to make a crude dirty form of AR to remove the legs before breaking them.

Thanks Geo, What kind of PM's could be in the eeproms with the windows. They look so cool I'm going to hate breaking them. What about the ceramic eproms that have no window are there any PM's in them that are worth while?

the bonding wires are so small and shiny that they reflect light pretty good. the only way to tell if they are gold is with a jewelers loupe. i break them all and process them like they were ceramic CPU's. if you use patience, you should do ok with them. the PROM's without the window have as good a chance of having gold as the EPROM's.

PM content should be about the same as ceramic CPU's but in different proportions.

Just a tecnical point on terminology, but an eeprom would have no need of a window.

ROM - Read Only Memory is a hard coded device.
PROM - Programmable Read Only Memory can be programmed one time only.
EPROM - Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory can be programmed, then at a later time erased and reprogrammed. These are the packages with windows. To erase an EPROM, the package is exposed to UV light (usually) for a period of time. It can then be reprogrammed.
EEPROM - Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory has no need for a window. It is erased electrically so there is no need for it.
