Hi , all ,
been lurking a while , and decided its time to step into the light.
I work in a precious metals shop.
I buy gold , silver, platinum, etc. all day, everyday.
When Im off, I scrounge the yard sales in Atlanta and I go out and find pounds of scrap jewelry and stuff for myself.
My boss, hes taught me alot in the last few months, from how to spot the real stuff , to testing, to paying a fair value for scrap.
Really , way more than that, but Ill discuss that elsewhere.
Back in high school, I took a chemistry class to prep for college. I went to a vocational school so we pretty much had 2 full chem labs to work in. It was one of my favorite classes and one of my all time favorite instructors , A chem professor from the college taught it and he made the mundane pretty damn exciting.
I still have an interest in chemistry , 30 years later.
My new line of work and chemistry is what lead me here.
Ive watched a ton of videos, have been reading Hokes book , watching lazers steves stuff , luaghing at that crazy silver guy's accent , Aquilla , I think on his youtube channel and just preparing myself for the next steps.
And... just mucking off here when Im bored at the job.
Im planning on acquiring the assorted stuff to try my hand at refining soon , but , I recon I wont get started till i have it all mostly assembled.
Even then , Ill prolly keep researching until I can finally get the confidence to try.
On a side note, Ive met a professional refiner , Hes a super nice guy, and every time Im over there , hes trying to teach me the dirty bits and I think I could ask to intern with him a few times to get an idea of refining on a large scale.
Sooo...
This may seem overly ambitious but ...
my intentions here are to do some journeys on this forum.
My plan is to start with a nice full sized acetylene torch rig and some crucibles and safety gear, just to experiment on my .925 and make some bars.
Then Ill prolly do a basic chemistry whiteboard video involving the reactions noobies will be dealing with and the safety video to go with it.
This will explain whats actually going on in the reacton vessels and cover the safety aspects of dealing with acids, bases, heat and using the right equipment.
While Im collecting the remaining safety gear , chemicals, tools, and containers , Ill still be researching Hokes and this forums resources.
Next , Ill try some karat gold refining out under the porch in my back yard.
After that , Ill prolly need to learn the silver refining methods to get that stuff out of solution from my initial experiments.
During these experiments , Ill be learning how to recycle the waste materials and disposing of the stuff that needs to be dealt with by pros.
Then Ill tackle the gold filled crap laying around the office and my ever growing costume collection.
Then Ill prolly be done with tuts. I dont think Escrap would be worth the effort , nor do I want to bite off the mouthful that is PBN's.
Ive laid out my gameplan for everyone to see.
I feel that theres really a metric ishton of info out there on this , but theres virtually none for the extreme noobies point of view.
None that explain the reactions in laymans terms that I know of.
At least not the kind I can easily find in a clear , step by step process , both written and on video together with the basic chemistry included.
I hope to fill the void with a few video series and tutorials strictly for beginners.
I realize this ish aint rocket science , but I think people would want to know the whys of AR dissolving gold, and why SMB drops gold out of solution. Why does copper pull silver out of solution , Why does Nitric dissolve SIlver and not gold. That sort of info I think could be useful and simple enough to explain to beginners. From the valence electrons up.
