I am needing some guidance as to how I should continue my gold recovery process

Point 1. For PCBs Aqua Regia is not a good solution anyway so save your Nitric. Point 1.5 Better use AP or Cupric Chloride etching as it actually are. Take the PCBs and cut away the plated items as fingers and such and then put them in a bucket and cover it with some HCl. Then put in a...

    Gold plated tubing - large

Thanks Nickton. Yes I'm putting them to one side for now and I'll hopefully have more similar material at some point to run them with. I was going to saw them in 3 or 4 sections (Keeping the filings) and put them in AP if that was the suggested best option.

Newly created copper (ll) chloride leach vessel

It is going to use the same liquid isn’t it? So I don’t understand how you are containing things. There is no point in over engineering unless it is for the fun of it.

    Waste solutions

One of our members leaches whole boards and more in AP and gets Pd out in a certain way by cementing on copper. I think the main goal here is to get the AP in a lesser active state, not so much free acid left. And not much cupric chloride, but more cuprous chloride. It's a fine balance as Orvi...

AP solution for removing ic chips legs

And this is why videos can never give the full story. They are good for the basics at times, but can never give the full information to be able to understand all the possible variables that can go wrong. Let alone how to fix them. You have to be able to, at a minimum, understand some basics of...

    New feedstock question

Forgive me for really just now understanding the AP process. But this is correct, I cannot have a line that takes weeks to process. Nor can I spend more money on labor to brush individual boards. and just so Brett understands I have about 30 days from when a truck shows up to put a check back...

    Metastannic Acid Experiment

...2500F° (+-1300C°); but tin liquifies around 230C°... what is the right way? How can one manage to make it "red hot" without liquifing it? I guess a stainless steel pan on an eletric plate would work? Just wondering..would this route be quicker and create a lot less waste instead of the AP...

    Newbie

Thanks for the welcome, and the reading material, I'll be jumping straight into that! I've been using AP solution for base metal removal, HCl and bleech for dissolving the gold and sodium metabisulfite for precipitation. I did a small batch of pins and fingers to test the process, had a slight...

    Silver Peroxide

No need for Peroxide in AP or rather it’s correct name, Cupric Chloride leach. You need oxidised green copper in HCl or just plain HCl with air bubbling in wich there are a source of Copper.

    ATENTION AT GOLD PLATED BOARDS!

The base metals will consume a lot of nitric and you'll get a dirty solution. I'd start with AP. This will leave nice clean gold foils.

    Pin Problems

No need to roast it prior to leaching for pins and such, just put them straight into AP. If one have clean pins without solder one can heat them to red to avoid floaters and such. Not to oxidize it but to remove organics like oils and fat. Gold filled and karat Gold should be heated to a low red.

    Melting Gold Powder

While a melt dish does look like a scorifier, a melt dish usually has a pour lip. I didn't see any at Legend, at least on that page. Using the dish, as 4metals states, will not blow material all over the place, such as trying to melt in a deeper crucible. A deeper crucible creates way too much...

    New to silver extraction!

Just an idea since i am confused a little bit, but as I understood, you have processed a mixed batch of e-scrap not selective, but as a whole. Could that be that this batch had some heat paste remnants on the boards or on components? It happened to me when I started this adventure (2018) and I...

...need to study, and I mean a lot. Here is for that: We ask our new members to do 3 things. 1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining. It is free here on the forum...

What's the final word on Kovar...?

I have been breaking down two kilos of top hats in AP. It’s been months but they are breaking down. I’m in no hurry. It’ll be done when it’s done.

Citric acid method gone wrong maybe?

Citric acid + NaCl will give weak HCl, hence you have weak AP in this method. Heating is essential and lot of time

    New to silver extraction!

...I’m asking about here first before I do anything about it, that way I don’t mess it up like my first time!! 🙃 The cpus I processed through AP method, gold fingers I did nitric, I also tried gold pins in nitric as well but I think I should’ve just stuck those in AP. Let me know if y’all have...

    Question about gold plated pins

...Pry open each row separately, a couple of pins at a time. But if the pins are still in the plastic and off the boards, you could go straight for AP. I tossed a bunch of exactly those control cards connectors in AP and they came out clean after some rinsing. All the copper was eaten out. That...

So i want to purchase some scrap can anyone help me out with a yay or ney

...and formation of hydroxides. Many of our members has problems sourcing Nitric in the first place, so we do what we call a Cupric Chloride etch aka AP. This dissolves Copper quite easy and all you need is HCl and an aquarium air bubbler. And it will leave most of the Pd and all of the Gold and...

    AP suitable components/material

...I joined, so time is not one of my concerns here at all! In fact I'd much prefer a situation where I could have one or two buckets with parts in AP that I could almost set and forget, apart from the odd shake. I intend to add the very minimum of peroxide to get the process going in fact. (I...

    Brazilian Navy ship plates

...I find metastin when I process plated pins there it is difficult to get rid of the tin (Sn) I have some plated pins I intend to recover in the Ap solution because I know I will find a lot of tin (Sn). I haven't used AP solution yet, but I read a lot on the forum about it. You have to use...

New Guy Figuring This All Out

...will have cemented back out and the H2O2 will be depleted. If you have doubts, just replace the old with new material to dissolve in the same AP or add a clean piece of copper. In AP, the gold is actually not stripped, the copper and basemetals are dissolved from underneath. Leaving gold...

Looking for advice as I am finishing the first phase of the AP process

If you intend to dissolve more material in the future, just add HCl and air to regenerate the AP.

    Okay.. I’m negative gold..

...separate and don't process them with fingers or other circuit board bits. They may look shiny and golden, but they only have minimal electroplating and always have disappointing yields. You don' t want to put them in AP bubbler baths since it will take an eternity to fully dissolve base metals.

    Pin Problems

Is it worth oxidizing the material beforehand? My second test run yield was better and a little faster but the post digested material was a fine sludge and very diffucult to filter. Also a lot of unidentified white precipitate. I oxidized the starting material until the green flame fades to...

Have a question about dehydrated AP Solution.

Distilled water is only essential when processing silver with nitric acid - to avoid formation of insoluble silver chloride. Otherwise, for AR or AP, using distilled water isn´t anything bad, but wasteful - as your AP or AR is already full of chloride ions. Use regular water and you will be...
