Here is my failsafe way for beginners to make AP. Without H2O2.

If it was solid Gold it would definitely have a marking. Do you have an used AP solution? If so, you could run it for a few days. If it is brass or bronze that would be apparent after some time when the copper get exposed.

I appreciate the "rant". There are very few things more important to a researcher than the number of citations of their publications. Giving credit to those hobbyist that share their work, encourage more sharing and peer review. Enough can't be said.

You never dissolve Gold in/on cards/PCBs. You dissolve the base metals to release the foils. Pins is a different story.

I wanted to follow up on this to report my findings. I've left the pins in AP for about a week now with no observable change. I do see that some of the pins now feel a little 'soft', but I am not seeing a discoloration of the AP which would indicate that there is a high level of copper present...

When you have AP you do not need much more Copper. If there are some Copper available in the leach and plenty of air, you basically just need to give it some more HCl from time to time. Timeline is days to months depending on temperature and amount of material.

...is as pure as practical before actual refining. Another issue is that Nitric is expensive and may create trouble later in the process. By removing the base metal either mechanically, with AP or HCl. One saves Nitric, processing time and avoids issues later in the process. And maybe more as well.

Your material is looking dark. Hard to say if it's fully incinerated. I would incinerate it again, grind it again and dissolve the gold and the remaining copper in AR. AP will do it also, but it will take much more time to dissolve the gold.

Copper don't dissolve in HCl but with an oxidizer as Oxygen/air it do. This is the driver for the AP process. And the color is green. So if the Copper had a slight oxidation layer, the HCl would dissolve that.
