    Strange reaction...

Were there any aluminum or iron parts in it? It looks like the copper cemented out on some base metal. And that gold looks like fake gold. Too glossy and shiny. Are there gold foils? And how did you make the AP?

Incinerated laptop mousepads- have I burned off the gold?

Hi folks, I'm back on the forum after many years out.. I am trying to process about 20 laptop trackpad pcbs with gold tracing. They had some kind of sticky glue substance over the gold so I decided to incinerate them to get rid of it. I put them in an old soup can in a wood fire which I fanned...

Electrolitic recovery and refining from book Nicholas Nickerson

...HERE. Jim Humbles book without any doubt, is much better than Nicholas Nickerson's attempt. This is covered here on the forum using different approaches. In bulk, which is how I have processed much e-scrap over the years by smelting or for smaller processors by AP leaches to dissolve the...

    Question about gold plated pins

...soon have ~3 kilograms of non-magnetic, assorted gold plated, cut pins and connectors from 1980's telecom boards that I plan to put in my 5 gallon AP bucket with a bubbler. Is there any down side putting all 3 Kg of material in my 5 gallon bucket of AP at once? Or should I divide it into...

    Waste disposal questions

I just do not know how long you can use AP for, I thought it would get saturated with metals in solution. I actually have a small recycling place that will sell me all gold plated fingers from boards, so no I'm not done lol. I've ashed cpus and flat packs from memory boards and can't see any...

    Looking for learning,

I usually do not see videos. What you need is HCl and a bit of corroded Copper. (Not strictly neccessary, butbit starts faster then). Then you need an aquarium bubbler. Pour in the HCl in a container big enough that the HCl do not splash out during bubbling. Start the bubbler and let it run. In...

    Gold recovery

Because before you can begin to refine you have to separate the gold from everything else. Nitric isn’t suitable because it dissolves nearly everything and you wind up with a conglomerate of metals in solution that can be anywhere from very difficult to impossible to separate.

    Question about gold plated pins

I inadvertently created the world's first all-copper, bocce ball. After two weeks of submersion in a bubbling AP basket/beaker solution, my 1 Kg of gold plated pins "fused together". My thought is that the pins were too densely confined from the onset. Any input is always appreciated

    Whats next after shredding?

...the Tin leach the material in HCl before shredding. Easiest method is to cut off the plated fingers and remove the chips. Leach the fingers in AP and then refine the foils. The chips are pyrolized, incinerated then ground and magnetically separated before gravity separation and...

    Waste disposal questions

Have you read the links I gave you in your welcome? There is a whole section on waste treatment and disposal. Anyway, add a bit of HCl and most of the sludge should dissolve.

Removing iron from 14k spring rings

AP. Volume depends on the number and size of the pieces your work big on. Hydrochloric (muriatic) and an aquarium air pump is all you need.

Step by step instructions for AP processing circuit boards

...to aid as stand pipe that worked much like a chimney using 4 inch pvc pipe. I chose the 4 inch strictly based on cost and availability. It was strapped to the post and routed to a barrel lid. Nothing fancy, just enough to stop things from rusting. Two 8 foot sections formed the whole pipe...

    Strange reaction...

Hi went to check and give my AP a stir and this is what I found... I think I may or contaminated it yesterday by adding some scrap gold which perhaps wasn't gold? Any ideas what made it changed? Thanks

    Is my HCl dissolving gold?

Well as per the big boys in here has told us, "nobody" runs whole boards in AR directly, but as they are concerned they are also in need to run proper waste management and maybe the ones you know about do not need to do so. All the big companies run pyro-metallurgical processes, they create an...

    Palm to head moment...

True, AP corrodes metal in your shed, BUT if you don't flood the AP with excess HCL, there are not much vapors escaping. AP works fine with a little excess HCL, and you can always add a bit more if those slimes don't dissolve fast enough. That said, better safe that sorry and vent that...

How hot does a cupel furnace need to be? Can it get hot enough that PMs are oxidized into bone ash cupels?

Sounds about right. I didn't know that copper makes cupeling difficult. I thought all the base metal was supposed to oxidize and absorb and the PM wouldn't. Fire is preferable over acid to me, but if I have to then I have to. What are your thoughts about getting the PMs that seem to have been...

    Waste disposal questions

AP will hold for "ever". But gets very dark, almost dark brown when saturated. Air and HCl will refresh it. If you add water, Cupric Chloride will crash out as a whitish sludge.

Copper coil with nitric acid and AR

Using AP without P to get gold foil is a nightmare, we need more than one month to do it with air bubbler, its not feasible at all for production business. After cementing copper with iron, I filter the solution to get copper, after that I increase the PH of the solution most of the time to 14...

    Need a hand please

I researched a lot and I couldn't find anything that was of substance. this is the reason why I am posting here. I am not using a acid electrolyte, I am using distilled water and non-iodized table salt for the electrolyte and during the process the brown sludge is forming quite abundant. I would...

    AP process

Hello to all. I want to learn about AP process but I can't find the right threads or sources to learn about. Can somebody help me? I used to use nitric acid for dissolving base metals but its too hard to control NOx fumes so I wanna make a change. Best regards Tahmoures

    Waste disposal questions

You will not see bonding wires without a loupe. AP is actually copper chloride. And not HCl or H2O2. It never goes bad, really.

That's probably excess HCl. Never 'kill' AP. It can be reused over and over. Leave urea for fertilizing plants. Not for refining. Different levels of CuCl in AP:

    Accomplished nothing so far

It is what sometimes is called AP. Just put some corroded Copper in HCl and start bubbling air through it. It works with plain Copper too but takes more time to start.

    Strange reaction...

True, I should know better with my experience in vintage watches, live and learn... I think for my next batch I'll use my torch to incenerate some crap prior to AP. After multiple filtations with H2o this is what I'm left with, very colourful 😏

My Plan - New to Refining. I would love a review please.

...of copper, the use of peroxide was meant to add oxygen to the HCl so it will speed up the process of oxygenating it. By doing so the HCl is now AP or more properly termed copper(ll)chloride aka, CuCl2 The problem can be that to much peroxide adds a rush of oxygen than can also dissolve some...
