I have seen it used with salt to clean placer gold and in treating black sands to reveil tiny gold partcles stuck to the sand or encapsilated by the sand.

vinigar contains 5%-18% acetic acid, a weak acid, attacks Iron, Zink, Magnesium, it also has been mixed 50/50 with nitric acid for nickel. it can also disolve sulfur and iodine.

they can use it to etch nickel.

here a lil info on etchants for metals:

Etchants
Acetic acid (H3COOOH)------GaAs; Pb; Ti
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)-------Al; Cr; Cu; Fe2O3;Ga; GaAs; GaN; In; Fe; Pb; Ni; NiO;
NiO3; Sn; SnO2; Ti; Zn.
HydroFluoric (HF)------------GaAs; Ni; SiO2; Ti.
Nitric acid (HNO3)--------------C; Cu; GaAs; In; Fe; Pb; Ni; Ag; Pd; Pt; Sn; Ti; Zn; ZnO.
Phosphoric Acid (H3PO4)-------Al; Cu; GaAs; GAN; FE;Ni; SiN; ZnO.
Pottassium Hydroxide(JOH)-----Al: C; Cu; Ag: GaAs; Si; Ti.
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)-----Al; Cu; Ag; Ti; GaAS; GaN.
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)----------C; CU; GaAs; Fe; Pb; Ni; Ti.

AQUA-REGIA (4 HCl : 1 HNO3) --------ETCH’S ALL METALS (Platinum group need higher temperature and time)

FeCl3 is commonly used to etch for nickel. Im sure CuCl2 (acid peroxide) just as good.
