Al & Mg

What's the quickest way to tell the difference between Al and Mg? Would a metal file and propane torch be it or some chemical test?

On the other hand, Al will react with
caustic solution - give H2, while Mg not

Thanks Lino. As in the Al chips in Draino. A readily available source of NaOH, Draino has Al chips throughout. In my attempts at trying to remove them, the highly hygroscopic NaOH was basically turning liquid before any success at removing any amount of chips. Anyone have any good ideas how to accomplish this? Are there any other name brands that don't have Al chips? Thanks.

ACE Hardware sells Rooto Brand drain cleaner. It is 100% lye with none of the aluminum chips.

Terry, Check out Johnson's foods if your in Attalla or Gadsden. They have 100% NaOH ( Drain Cleaner ) for $2.00 Lb can.
