Oooops, i should mention that any dissolving of aluminium in sodium hydroxide should be done in an open vessel and out of sunlight.
Hydrogen is the predominant product in terms of gasses, however, some of the impurities produced during this vigorous reaction may cause a spontaineous explosion. This happened years ago when a young lad was demonstrating the production of hydrogen through this very reaction, performed in a very large small necked jug, outside on a sunny day, with parents standing next to him, while filling a large weather ballon, when BANG! Yep, the exploding jug shredded their legs.
