I am excited to say I was in Southern California and was able to buy
Nitic acid (86% tech grade) at a local chemistry store for $36.40 for 2.5 L
This was an easy purchase (only part of a laundry list of labware and
other chemicals)

The Nitric is available via purchase with a company check or debit card.
Filling out a simple form is also required. If anyone needs the location let me know.

They had almost everything for supporting this website's processes on
hand and in small medium or large quantities. They did not have Urea, but could get it quickly.

Very happy.

I was at this store buying chemicals and such retail. They had a variety of magnetic stirrers and hot plates. One was a combo.

The price was far below the internet mfr recommended price. I paid $340.
VWR is the brand name and it is a VMS C-7.

This thing is great so far. It reads out in C for temp, and you can get an
accessory for a clamp stand and also a temperature reader. I guess this
interfaces with the unit and allows precision control of temp.

Very cool and impressive with the magnetic stirrer. It creates a vortex
quickly in water.

i must say it is stated as being maint. free and comes with a 24 month warranty and an offer to extend to 3 years free of charge.

Not free, but I have already spent about 1/2 the money trying to substitute unit and this is longer lasting and a more controllable answer.

I am getting ready to reprocess about 600 grams of au and 100 grams of pt and so on using this unit. I will have feedback as to practical usage for our needs.

I may consider buying some extra's and renting them out or something to those who are hobbyist trying to not spend much money. I don't know if I will do this, but I am pretty much willing to share resources in exchange for knowledge and experience.

Levi,

If you go to a industrial chemical supplier, you can buy nitric a lot cheaper. Univar is about the biggest and they have offices everywhere. I think they're industrial chemical division of VWR (Van Waters and Rogers), the company that made your hot plate/stirrer. The last time I bought a drum from them, 5 years ago in Houston, I paid a little over $2/gallon. Of course, the SS drum deposit was $750. They may repackage in 5 gal or 13 gal containers, but the per gallon price will go up. There are lots of other companies that supply industrial chemicals - Yellow pages under chemicals.

For smaller quantities, look for small companies that both sell lab supplies and repackage industrial chemicals. The last time I bought repackaged nitric in 1 gal containers, I paid $12. There should be several in southern Calif. Call Tri-ess in Burbank. They don't sell them anymore but they probably know who does.

The nitric you bought was probably 68%, rather than 86%.

I just bought (6) 2.5L bottles of 68-70% HNO3 ACS grade for just shy of $18 per liter. The price included all shipping to my door. The delivery arrived in three days from the order date and was all conducted over the internet without a hitch. I most likely could have found some technical grade cheaper, but this was the best deal I found in a half hour of looking with a google search.

I was reimbursed by my customer for the silver refining job (16.5 pounds of sterling jewelry) so the cost was not important to me.

Here's a photo of one of the jugs:

I'm happy with the price and the transaction went very smoothly.

Thanks so much Steve (& also Green Team), I found a site through a link called "legend" but other than browsing haven't really investigated or compared yet. I've got a business & EIN also so, we'll see.

On another note, on your CD ad you mentioned possibly squeezing in other small purchases into the same pkg to save on shipping/postage. Would a couple of cupels &/or melting dishes possibly fit?

Thanks,
John

John, Steve may be talking about combining hazmat items in the same shipment. This is doable if they are of the same DOT class. So DOT 8 corrosives can go with other corrosives, etc.

Good news. We are approved to buy Nitric in bulk now. The cost goes way down by buying in bulk (of course you pay per pound and the deposit
for one drum is like 700.00)

I will need to check the governance regarding redistribution. If it is legal for me to repackage and sell direct I will be happy to. I will be taking my
first order on Tuesday Feb. 3rd 2009.

Again, I will be researching the regulations first, and will follow the law. I am sure my activities are now watched carefully by those who are
unknown.

Does anyone have links for regulatory data?

Yes, the flat rate envelope will hold around three dishes or 5 cupels in addition to the DVDs.

Well there's a case of me assuming something that I ought not to have!

Heheh.

Advice still stands: whenever you order hazmat items, make sure you insist on combining the ones that can be combined.

That 77 kg drum deposit in Canada is $300.00 Canadian.

You may want to stock up on this purchase. Todays news fertilizer prices half of what they sold for last year. production is being cut back. This more than likely will have an adverse affect on nitric production, driving prices upwards. De beers did it with diamonds.
