i have a electric cell that i made i'm useing sulfric acid (battery acid ) the simple recipe but when i got done with the gold plated material i noticed alot of brown sludge chunks in mixture either i left the material in to long and it started to attack the base metals atleast thats my guess does anyone have a idea what this might be i see the black of gold in the mixture too just wondering what the brown might be it not a big deal to me i am hopeing to do a ar system soon to get more pure gold so if anything ill melt in to a nug then just soak it in ar if need be

fafrd,

I've seen spongy brown 'chunks' if the plated material had any type of label with adhesive on it (i.e. stickers on cpu lids) that was peeled off before stripping. The stuff floated to the top when the batch was diluted. I'm guessing the left over adhesive from the stickers was the source of the brown stuff in my case. I removed the stickers but the remaining gum caused the spongy brown gunk.

no steve their was no stickers or any sort of thing on them. it happened to be all pieces of gold plated bangle braclets. i'm thinking i left it in the solution to long. but it took a long time to dissolve the gold off. my battle plan is as follows 1 smelt what i do have now and pour it in cold water to make cold shot smash the pieces flat and redo in maybe a AR bath. i stopped the batch so i still have a pound of the braclet pieces. i'm thinking maybe doing everything in AR or another proccess. i'm thinking maybe use the electric cell to strip with out all the extra base metals and cold shot it and then AR in hopes of trying to make a more pure product . what do you think about this? then comes the problem of figureing the AR proccess out. being that i don't have alot of money to buy C M Hoke book does anyone have a cheaper source of info on AR or other methods? this last is a question for you lazersteve if i was going to purchase some computers in a large sum what type woud i be looking for? i notice that their is several catogries of them.

fafrd. Shor has some instructions on AR at thier website that may help. They don't say a whole lot. Just general stuff. Thier subzero is like sodium nitrate, and the recipe is the same for AR.

As for melting the gold from the cell and putting it in AR, I don't see the need to melt it. Just add a little nitric acid to the rinse to dissolve any base metals. Give it a good long time to settle, then siphon off that solution leaving just the gold powder. The gold powder can go directly into an AR mix. You won't need very much AR at all

The best junk pcs are the free ones !!

If you are going to pay for them, look for old 486's, Pentium 1's, Pentium Pros, and Slot 1 types. The more add in cards in the tower the better. I typically get mine for free, but I have bought a few here and there for $1-$3.

Phillips right, no need to melt the powder until it's cleaned and redissolved into solution. The extra effort will pay off in purity. You can dissolve the powder with AR, AP, or HCl-Cl.
