Solid copper will cement out all PMs.

However, the use of HCl-Cl is usually done as a refining step (while AP is a recovery step, if the gold is plated onto copper).

If you are refining, you want to separate the PMs, not just drop them all together.

But if you somehow end up with a solution that has both PMs and base metals dissolved in it, then solid copper is a great way to separate the PMs from the base metals. It is also good for cementing silver from a nitric solution.
