Is it worth it to save the ends of the wires (old printer connectors, telephone plugs, and computer monitor connectors) to later get the gold out of them or is it better just to throw it in with the insulated wire bin for scrap?

I have so far been segregating them from the insulated wires, but don't know if it is even possible to get the gold off of these things.

Thanks for your help.

burn them and collect the pins. some are better than others...

Just a quick warning, burning PVC produces HCl gas, 1kg of PVC will potentially produce, when burnt, 1lt of 30% HCl acid, and if there are any fruit trees around that have fruit on them, the HCl gas will cause them to fall off, ripe or not.

I would suggest pyrolysis, mix the ends with loads of wood ash, then pyrolize, the HCl gas will react with the ash, producing stable chlorides.

Cheers

I know it's alot of work but I use nippers to cut the gold connectors out of the plastic. The first couple of times it's seems like it takes forever. Then when you get the hang of it you can rock out 50-100 connectors a night. I only do this when it's raining or cold. If you have 10,000 of thousands pyrolizing is the way to go. I also nip the gold connectors of the monitor plugs it's just as easy.
