Copperas

Will copperas drop iron from solution? I dissolved some material that may contain iron pyrite (just for fun). When I added copperas it immediately turned the orange liquid brown just like gold. Is that the iron reacting?

copperas will not drop iron as copperas is iron sulfate FeSO4.

Iron in solution can have many colors green orange brown yellow and so on depending on conditions.

Duh! Didn't think of that! Why would adding copperas turn the solution brown like gold? Any ideas?
