dmg test solution

i use 10grams of dmg dissolved in 1liter of alcohol-----the test when done in nitric solution containing pd, produces the yellow pd-dmg---the problem is that the alcohol reacts with the nitric,bubling and giving a nauseating smell(sickening).
could the dmg pwder be dissolve in another solvent instead of alcohol?

ps :i tried to dissolve in water by boiling,but is very dificult and takes a long time---and does not dissolves completelly as with alcohol
