After searching for the reasons why, I found that bubbling oxygen through ammonium hydroxide creates nitrogen monoxide (NO1, nitric oxide not to be confused with N2O, nitrous oxide). nitric oxide + oxygen create nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NO2 creates nitric acid when bubbled through water. This method is used when making nitric acid for commercial use and operates at 800C with a platinum catalyst. There has been experiments into endothermic reactions of these gasses in the atmosphere. I am wondering whether or not bubbling pure oxygen (relatively pure) through ammonia hydroxide is enough to start the reaction of making NO1 in solution. There are youtube videos showing the red vapors being emitted but i wanted to check here before i try anything.
