I've seen male RJ45 and RJ11 where the "blades" in the plug are fully coated, but more frequently the ones where only the exposed edge of the blade is coated.

I've seen female RJ45 come in all sorts of styles. Some are pins pushed into a plastic assembly, others are pins moulded into a plastic subassembly pushed into the main plastic housing. Some of the pins are round profile, fully plated; some are flats with only the contacting area plated on both sides, some are flats with only the front of the flat plated. I've even seen some which did not appear gold plated at all!

All that is to say, I haven't a clue about coating thickness. I see varied depth of gold color, though I don't know that you can use color as a reliable indicator of thickness. But coating area varies so dramatically, and is also easier to "eyeball", and might be a better way to try to apples-to-apples some comparisons.
