hi everybody,
does anyone know if you can buy a small testing kit for testing for gold/silver/platinum, and if i can where could i get it from and approx how much?

i have alsorts of little bits what i could test myself if i had a kit, and if i could learn how to use it effecivley, (rather than annoying you guys all the time asking, is this gold?, is this silver? is this platinum? lol)

i know you can buy those zapper guns that tell you everything but they are massive money! lol,

thanks in advance guys, any help/information is realy appriciated,

A jewelers supply house will have it or a forum member in your area might be able to help. Pat (patnor1011) sells some testing solutions hes in Ireland http://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=9158

Hope this helps

It's also very easy to make...

To test for gold and platinum group metals

By dissolving tin in HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) you can make a batch of gold/platinum/palladium testing solution called Stannous Chloride. It's been well written about and there are many posts on this forum explaining how to make it, and test with it.

To test for silver and base metals.

By mixing Potassium Dichromate with Nitric Acid:

1 ounce of potassium bichromate, 6 ounces HNO3 (Nitric Acid), , and 2 ounces water.

When applied to the surface of the metal you are testing, it will cause the solution to change colors. Here is a list of the colors, and what they are.

I would also get a set of needles (sometimes called keys). They are tipped with different karats of yellow gold alloys.

As a minimum, you need a set of acids, a stone, and a scale. The needles scratchings are used side by side with the sample scratchings as a comparison.

Download this guide - see Pawnbroker Bob's attachment. It's about the best around.
