So I work for a cable company that goes threw large amounts of remotes. I have access to basically anything that can hit the trashcan and the other day I noticed a destroyed remote had quite a bit of what look like gold plated contacts on it. Can anyone tell just by looking at these remotes if they are real gold and would they be worth trying to recover. http://imgur.com/a/nQRAv Here are some pictures I took of the remote circuits and bear in mind im talking about a couple thousand of theses I can get my hands on.

Also what method would you guys use to recover the gold I really want to try electrolysis but not sure if that is the best way?

The contacts are gold but there's very little of it.

To recover from those you will want to use the A/P method (Acid / Peroxide).

Do a search on the forum for that process. Spend a few months reading those threads, the safety threads, Hoke's book and the Guided Tour you can find linked in Lazer Steve's posts.

That will get you a good start.

My Monster-in-law...kidding
Just decided she no longer wants to tare things apart for me...Bummer there but she used to take every remote I could get my hands on apart so I could see what's on them.
Unless you know which remotes are plated, it's not worth taking all of them apart. Most have nothing worth the effort. Some however are plated which adds to the pile/ collection.

She'd do anything I sent her... All kinds of kids electronic toys, some have traces and plated gold; remotes, printers(pain in the butt unless so I gave her a 6lb hand sledge to bust the sides enough to pop the pins for the ink holder), CD drives, hards drives, anything you can imagine, she destroyed. Toasters, curling irons, and other small aplliances all have silver buttons so she did them as well.

Going to the local dollar auction is excelent for making way too many piles of anything and everything. I'd much rather have computer stuff but around here they still get $10 per computer for scrap....

B.S.
Take pictures so we can see which you have.
