Thanks Jim, I knew ferrous chloride was used to etch copper in circuit boards, but did not know about the air making it dissolve gold that easily, seems like the iron would displace the gold, easier than a copper would,I could understand a strong oxidizer, making it easier to attack gold,a good hot boil should remove any air, that is one way we pretreat our boiler water to remove oxygen, in a deareator to preheat water, the hot water cannot hold as much air, and oxygen attacks the iron in the boiler's.
Hello i want to ask if FeCl etch can really dissolve gold even without h202?
If its the case then wouldnt it be unsuitable for gold fingers and magnetic pins?
This post is pretty old, so just wanted to make sure.

Butcher will not reply since he passed away in November.

well given the vagueness of your question I would suggest filtering the sulfuric acid soluiton then boiling it down untill the solution reaches the point where the metal salts precipitate out. If the sulfuric acid isn't reasonably usable begin focusing on removing one type of contamanant at a time. The stuff in the filter will doubtlessly include the sand that you mentioned and likely iron compounds. The stuff that precipitated out may include many different metal sulfates or sulfites that dissolve in water but not sulfuric acid.

Knowing exactly what went into a solution is the key to knowing how to get it out.
When I take my used Nitric acid and evaporate it to remove the water and increase the acidity, I sometimes have sediment at the bottom of my dish. I assume that this is the base metals. copper. brass. German silver. etc. Is there a way to extract those metals from this sediment?
