I found some sort of military handheld phone out in the desert where people like to shoot guns at whatever object they can lay their hands on.

Underneath the keypad was a circuit board with spring loaded buttons and each number had a nice disk of what looks like gold and all of the traces on the board are the same. This stuff is pretty easy to peel off with a utility knife so I removed all of it and put in my stash.

I find alot of stuff like this and I wonder if this is plated, solid or what? Does anyone know about this? I find it easy to peel fingers and traceways off the board and just wonder if the material that "looks like gold" is plated. Scraping the "board side" reveals metal of the same color.

Also in the same device are these plated pins. They seem to have very little material on them, are these worth fooling with?

This wasn't an early unit, it was made in the mid to late 90s. I saved the aluminum serial plate off of it and will post the model when I get home so you guys can look for them. It was quite full of "interesting " bits that looked like they might yeild something. For right now, I'm picking off the obvious stuff and saving the rest for later when I've learned more.

Here's the details on the device, it's a "Digital Non-Secure Voice Terminal". It was dated 7/92 on the back. Sounds like something you could pick up by the gaylord full at a government auction.

It also had these two gold pin connectors on it. These pins are plated along the whole length of the pin through the plastic in the connector (any ideas on how to get them out would be appreciated greatly). The smaller one on the right is an R-238 connector and the pins are pretty large, almost 1/8" in diameter with the plated part about 1" long. I assume it's fairly thickly plated since it was designed to be connected multiple times. There is a large board in this thing too with lots of other goodies, this was just the obvious stuff to me.
