Hey all. I have been working toward total reclamation of material processed. I have a test batch of incinerated material that I am going to run in the ball mill when it is ready next week.

I will be starting with 20 pounds of chips removed from memory sticks. After milling I will remove the magnetics.

My question is ....... What methods has any one tried as far as leaching the values from the powder. Have you had success? I can see filtration and washing the material being a bit of a challenge no matter what.

Any hints, tips or tricks would be appreciated.

I'd be interested to see what method you settle upon. I have about 150 pounds of RAM sticks from which fingers have been cut and will get around to processing them eventually.

How did you go about removing the chips from the fiberglass?

I was thinking of using a dilute HCl soak to remove the fine wires and solder holding them in place.

Hi goldformike. I built a little jig and buzzed them off with a sawzall using a chisel blade.

Yeh but Mike,he's talking about 150 pounds.Thats an aweful lot of chips you know?

Yeah Mic I know, I did about 80 pounds of memory in 3 four hour runs at it. It was tedious but it went pretty quick once a method and motion was worked out. I do like the HCL idea. Far more passive, he he he.

OWWW!
I have one of those, glondor. Just the thought of all that jarring vibration - Since I have DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease), Cervical & Thoracic Spondylosis, I'm afraid it would cost me more in meds than I'd get if I tried that! :p

I'm thinking slightly heated, dilute HCl, since dilute HCl attacks base metals even better than concentrated - more cost-effective, too??

BTW - can we get a "weeping in pain" or "screaming with pain" emoticon? 8)

I can't say that i have done this at large scale yet, but my thoughts are:
To wash well with water the separated magnetic elements, they can drag with them some of the powders that contain values.
Leach with dilute nitric to dissolve Pd, Ag and base metals (maybe you can even reuse this leach to several batches...)
Leach gold with dilute AR...

I'm thinking that every leach will need around 48 hours with frequent stirring to be fully effective...
For filtering these volumes you can always let gravity do its thing and then siphon the solutions.
If i remember right, Arthur is using similar process...
