I live in Wisconsin and it's currently 5°-10°F. Could this method be attempted outside? If so, is it safe to use some sort of heat source to keep the liquids from freezing? Would the HCl be enough to keep it from freezing? Just curious

If you are using HCl then you have more serious problem than the cold.
