A lot of the stuff they make for toilets, etc. have inhibitors in them that make it so they don't dissolve copper pipes, etc. This would make it basically useless for refining gold, etc. as you want the acid to dissolve the copper. You'd have to look for the MSDS sheet (or ingredients somewhere) and see what it lists. Sometimes though, only the "dangerous" ingredients are listed on the MSDS sheet and not the "safe" things.
