The reason plastic is usually incinerated off before processing is the plastic often either covers some values preventing contact by the acid, or the plastic (and this is true if the plastic is flat and smooth) is a problem with either the acid getting to the metal if a bunch are laying flat or the acid not easily being rinsed off the plastic and carrying values off when discarded.

But I never had any problems chemistry wise only from factors as mentioned above.
