Had an interesting task thrown at me the other day.
My jewler friend Jim bought a Johnson Mattheys 10oz bar of Silver (underspot)
He asked me to take a look at it, and my dumbass sensors were redlined. The seller plated it, "poorly" in gold.
A couple of days earlier I had made a batch of KI/Iodine and saved an ounce just for posterity. Ran it cold with some h2o2. 6 minutes.
The stuff comes in handy. Tried an unconventional precipitation method.
Took a stainless steel malt cup. Wrapped poly ethelene tube around it. Hooked a 12v pump (pc liquid cooling) filled with ice water. let it cool the cup.
propped it up on a lab stand open side down...like a teepee.
Pulled out the IOMicro torch, and precipitated.
after the water left the salt remaining was Auric Iodide.
Heat forced the iodine to a gas rising into the cold cup, recrystalizing for easy recovery. the gold was shiny
Ive been playing with a similar method for titanium and Iodine crystals, Vanarkl method. Lower initial heat and a tungsten electrode @ 1100C to decompose the iodine.
then cold cup to recover.
