Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell me if Tin Oxide would be ok to use when making up Stannous Chloride?
It's the "Oxide" bit i'm not sure about.

Kind regards

Tin dioxide (SnO2) can be reduced by heating with carbon to tin metal, which can be used to make stannous chloride with HCl.

It won't work, but not for the simple reasons. I would bet a huge sum of money that this tin oxide is in fact stannic oxide, SnO2, and every grade I've seen is a nonreactive, hard, crystalline white powder. Stannous oxide, by comparison is black, although I have never seen it for sale. Tin metal is cheap enough. I'd stick with what works.

Only reason I asked was because i was given about 50grams of the stuff for free.
Like you said LittleJohnny, stick to what works best.

Cheers anyway guys
